Workshop: Sunday, July 20, 2025

Dylan Cook’s shop, 2700 N Lake Valley Rd, Prescott Valley, AZ

Demonstrator: Dylan Cook
In 1988, a gate was designed by Kent Gugler as a project for the Arizona Artist
Blacksmiths Association. Smiths from around Arizona, including but not limited to;
Len Ledet, Bill Calloway, Scott Sweeby, Bob Rummage, Peter Sevin, Ron Kinyon,
Maurice Hamburger, Cathy Borthwick and Russ Borthwick met at Brian Hughes’ shop (
then called Chili Pepper Forge) to forge elements and construct the gate.
Construction of the gate was near completion but fell just short within the week
alotted. The gate was to be mounted at Prescott Fine Arts known today as the
Hazeltine Theatre. In 2017, the gate was given to Dylan Cook to work with students
to complete and install. The wall that the gate was intended to be mounted to has
since been demolished, so a permanent location for installation is yet to be
determined. On Saturday, July 19th, Dylan will be discussing the geometry of a gate
and demonstrating fluted scrolls to match the existing scroll work. On Sunday, July
20th, workshop participants will be making tooling, forging structural elements, and
completing the hinge system of the gate. The gate will be on Display at Winterfest
in January, 2026.
