Sam Rivera will host an Open Forge for the Arizona Artist Blacksmith Association at the Sculpture Tucson barn in Brandi Fenton Park from 9 to noon on Saturday, April 5, 2025
Sculpture Tucson is near the entrance to Brandi Fenton Park at Alvernon and River Rd. Turn into the Park then turn to the right almost immediately at the Sculpture Tucson sign. There will be an AABA Open Forge sign at the Sculpture Tucson gate. Call Sam at 520-591-4700 if you have trouble finding the place.
Sam doesn’t plan to feature any particular project this time, so come and work on whatever you’re working on at home now or whatever ideas develop at the open forge. You are also welcome to bring ideas and questions about a project you are working on or that you want to start.
Sam would like to encourage people to bring their own hammers and tongs if they have them. That will let more folks who don’t have a lot of tools yet to get to work as soon as possible on Saturday.
Admission is free, but donations to cover propane, donuts, etc. are welcome.
Safety glasses are required. (Ear protection, closed-toe shoes, and long pants are highly recommended.)

Tucson, AZ
Demonstrator: Steve Grater
Steve will be talking about and demonstrating how he adapts classic blacksmithing
and jewelrymaking techniques for fabricating abstract fine art sculptures – large
and small. He also will be working with coldforming clastic and anticlastic shapes
in steel.
Steve likes to bend metal into compound curves with self-made tools. He studied blacksmithing with Frank Turley and bronze casting with Tom Barringer, assisted sculptor Jerry Harris, and has been making and selling metal art since 2000. Techniques for making jewelry, vessel forming and repoussé inform the aesthetic of his sculptural work. Steve’s sculptures have been exhibited and collected throughout the American west. In 2024, he was an artist-in-residence at Buffalo Creek Art Center in Gardnerville, Nevada, where he completed a monumental commission for the sculpture park. Steve is represented in southern Arizona by Más y Más Gallery in Tubac.
For Steve’s presentation, he will be talking about and demonstrating how he adapts classic blacksmithing and jewelry-making techniques for fabricating abstract fine art sculptures. He also will be working with cold-forming clastic and anti-clastic shapes in steel.
